AUGUST 9, 2017 – TULSA, OK – Tulsa Ballet will present a contemporary triple bill performance at the Joyce Theater in New York City in March of 2018. The company last performed at the Joyce Theater in 2009. The return tour has been made possible thanks to the generous support of Mollie Williford and Suzanne and Jim Kneale. Artistic Director Marcello Angelini is thrilled to announce the tour and says, “This is the perfect time for the company to be back in The Big Apple, as the energy and relevance of what we are producing reflects the renewed vitality of the city. This trip is also in perfect synergy with the revitalization of our community and the national visibility we are receiving thanks to the multiple successful initiatives we are undertaking.”
The company made its international debut in 2002, when they performed as part of the Sintra Festival in Sintra, Portugal. In 2007, the company performed in Serbia and Croatia, and in 2008, they traveled to Seoul, South Korea. Most recently in 2016, they toured Italy where they were described as ‘the fifth most important company in the US’. Tulsa Ballet continues to be invited to perform in prestigious venues nationally and internationally to represent the culture of our city, state and country to the rest of the world.
Angelini says, “A decade ago Tulsa felt like the best kept secret in our country. However, today we are being talked about, and in very positive terms, by publications all over the US. Whether it is for being among the top ten destinations for young entrepreneurs or the top ten communities in the country to retire in… or because of the downtown revitalization or the arts, people all over the country are taking notice of Tulsa. We are appealing to every generation and every age, and that means economic development for our city and area.”
The strong national and international reputation of the company shines an international spotlight on the city of Tulsa and the state of Oklahoma as a leader in world-class arts and culture. Angelini says, “This is a pivotal time in the history of Tulsa It is important for the local arts organizations to shine, to export our culture and to show off the sophistication of our city. Tulsa Ballet is the official cultural ambassador for the state of Oklahoma, as decreed by Governor Brad Henry in 2009, which is a great honor and responsibility. It is a responsibility we take seriously, endeavoring and committing to export a Tulsa made cultural product all over the world.”
