TULSA BALLET BRINGS THE SLEEPING BEAUTY BACK TO TULSA WITH ALL NEW SETS AND COSTUMES
January 23, 2026- Tulsa, OK – Tulsa Ballet revives one of their best-selling ballets in their repertoire, The Sleeping Beauty, this time with brand new sets and costumes designed by an award-winning designer and built by some of the top set builders in Italy.
Choreographed by Tulsa Ballet’s own Artistic Director Marcello Angelini after Marius Petipa, this new production blends the timeless elegance of classical ballet with innovative staging meant to respect the tradition of the 19th century while streamlining the story for 21st century audiences. For this production, Angelini commissioned brand-new scenery and costumes to world-renowned designer Emma Kingsbury. Kingsbury, originally from Australia, has designed and worked all over the world for stage, TV, opera and even film, including movies such as Blacklight, with Liam Nissan, and The Wolverine with Hugh Jackman. Ms. Kingsbury returns to Tulsa following her 2018 engagement, where she designed the costumes for Ma Cong’s Pentaptych.
Tulsa Ballet Artistic Director Marcello Angelini shares, “One hundred thirty-six years after its premiere, The Sleeping Beauty is still performed by every major company in the world, and together with Swan Lake is still the most popular classical ballet on the planet. And is still one that makes or breaks ballerinas… Dancing Aurora is a rite of passage for every dancer aspiring to be a star. The technique, quality of dancing, physical stamina and unaffected interpretation needed to successfully carry this role, make it both highly sought- after and feared by any Ballerina.”
