February 2018 – TULSA, OK – Tulsa Ballet brings one of the world’s most beloved romantic fairy tales to life with its blockbuster production of The Sleeping Beauty at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center, February 21-24th.
Tulsa Ballet will perform Artistic Director Marcello Angelini’s version of this great classic, which is faithful to the 1890 original version choreography by Marius Petipa while incorporating additional choreography by Angelini throughout the ballet. The Sleeping Beauty will be staged by Tulsa Ballet’s artistic team, including Assistant Artistic Director Daniela Buson and Ballet Mistress/Master Susan Frei and Alfonso Martin. The ballet showcases one of the world’s most recognizable scores by composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a score made famous by Walt Disney in his 1959 animated movie by the same title. All performances will be accompanied by live music from the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Tulsa Ballet’s Resident Conductor Peter Stafford Wilson.
This year, Tulsa Ballet is excited for the homecoming of former principal dancer Hyonjun Rhee who will be returning as a guest artist dancing in the lead role of the Prince. Mr. Rhee is now dancing with Universal Ballet. He and fellow principal dancer Youhee Son left Tulsa in 2017 to return to Korea and start a family and have since welcomed beautiful baby twins. The return is extra special because Hyonjun will also reunite with fellow former stage partner at Universal Ballet and current Tulsa Ballet Principal dancer Na-eun Kim who will be performing in the lead role of Princess Aurora. Hyonjun Rhee says, “I am very privileged to dance with my old partner Na-eun and am excited to dance with the other lovely dancers and friends in Tulsa Ballet. The role of the Prince is one of my favorites because of the challenging solos. It’s so special to dance the role again back in Tulsa.”
Featuring a vibrant cast of characters, including the innocent Princess Aurora, her dashing Prince, the malevolent Carabosse, and many more. With lavish scenery and opulent costumes, this enchanting tale of a princess, a spell and a kiss has famously been portrayed through ballet as one of the art form’s most treasured and romantic productions. Enjoy it with your entire family!
