Tulsa Ballet Joins Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival 2023
TULSA, OK – Tulsa Ballet is proud to announce it will participate in the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival 2023 this coming August. Jacob’s Pillow is lauded worldwide as “a hub and mecca of dancing” and “one of America’s most precious cultural assets.” The festival brings thousands of people from across the country to the Berkshires of Massachusetts where they can enjoy hundreds of free performances, discussions, and events. Participation in the festival is an honor for Tulsa Ballet. The Company will bring three works, including popular pieces shown as part of our Signature Series and Creations in Studio K performances. Tulsa Ballet will close out the festival with performances August 23-27, 2023.
Speaking on the upcoming participation, Tulsa Ballet Artistic Director Marcello Angelini said, “I am both humbled and delighted by the kind invitation by Ms. Pamela Tatge, the Executive and Artistic Director of Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival, for Tulsa Ballet to perform at the festival this summer. It has been long in the making, but we will finally be there to close the festival this August!”
Tulsa Ballet will bring three selections to the festival; Nicolo Fonte’s Divenire, Andrew McNicol’s Celestial Bodies, and the pas de deux from Katarzyna Kozielska’s Ode. Divenire was first performed at Tulsa Ballet’s Creations in Studio K in September 2022. Celestial Bodies was first performed at the 2022 Signature Series, and will make its return to Tulsa in 2024. Ode debuted at Creations in Studio K in 2021.
“I have been discussing the possibility of being part of the festival for two decades,” said Angelini, “but for some reason things never worked out. The timing of it is challenging for us, as in August we are preparing our September program. Also, during some seasons, we were just coming off an international tour the previous spring, thus unable to gear up for a summer engagement away from Tulsa. This time, though, things fell into place perfectly!”
Besides enjoying dozens of performances, participants at the festival will also take part in numerous community programs, train at The School at Jacob’s Pillow, and explore the Pillow’s rare and extensive dance archive.
“The Pillow is not only the oldest dance festival in our country, but also the most prestigious dance gathering in the US,” said Angelini. “We are extremely thankful for the opportunity not only to appear there, but to actually close the 2023 edition of the festival. Starting our 67th anniversary season at The Pillow is a recognition of our past accomplishments, and one that and energizes us to continue our upward trajectory as an arts leader in the community and for the community.”
The Pillow is a National Historic Landmark in Becket, Massachusetts. Performances will take place at the indoor Ted Shawn Theater and the outdoor Henry J. Leir Stage. For more info about how to support Tulsa Ballet at Jacob’s Pillow, visit https://tulsaballet.org/jacobs-pillow/.
