Tulsa Ballet is thrilled to be returning to the Joyce Theater in New York City, March 6-10, 2018. The company will give six performances of an exciting triple-bill program, featuring a world premiere creation from Resident Choreographer Ma Cong, and works created for Tulsa Ballet’s 2017 Creations in Studio K program by choreographers Helen Pickett and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa.
Shibuya Blues | Annabelle Lopez Ochoa
Lopez Ochoa’s work, Shibuya Blues, takes its inspiration from her experiences in new places and the loneliness one can feel when trying to assimilate to a new culture. Using precise movements and a large cast, she creates a metropolis that feels like a complicated, well-oiled machine, but still manages to find moments of tender humanity. Critics from the Tulsa World praised her work for being “A twisty, demanding choreography that is grounded in sharp, solid classical technique… mixing steely pointe work and expressive acting.”
Meðal (Among) | Helen Pickett
When it premiered in September of 2017, The Tulsa World described Pickett’s Meòal as a “captivating work, brutal and beautiful all at once.” Although more of an abstract work, storylines can be created as the dancers seem to be searching for make connections with one another, and try to find common ground with an outsider as they create language through “intriguing, enigmatic, yet expressive use of gesture.”
Glass Figures | Ma Cong
Cong’s newest work for Tulsa Ballet features his signature neo-classical style of contemporary ballet. Drawing heavily on inspiration from music by Philip Glass, his work is layered with emotional textures and is suggestive of intimacy. Cong says he intends this work to be a physical expression of a musical statement.
