TULSA, OK – Tulsa Ballet presents Creations in Studio K, featuring three in-demand choreographers, September 16-25, 2022 at Studio K, its intimate performance space on Brookside. This lineup of performances kicks off the 66th season for Tulsa Ballet, and celebrates the 15th anniversary of Studio K opening to the public.
This season, Studio K performances will introduce a new dance maker to Tulsa: Australian born Craig Davidson. Davidson has created a large body of work for The Royal Ballet of Flanders, one of the most prestigious European ballet companies. This will be his second work for an American ballet company, following a work he created for the Atlanta Ballet.
Nicolo Fonte, who serves as Resident Choreographer for Ballet West, has created three works for Tulsa Ballet, in addition to staging his Bolero for the company. Fonte is a choreographer of international status, having worked with some of the top companies in the world, including the Dutch National Ballet, Compañia Nacional de Danza in Madrid, and the Australian Ballet.
Ma Cong served as Resident Choreographer with Tulsa Ballet for more than 15 years. He has created a large body of work for the company during his tenure, including a piece to be re-staged with TBII, Tulsa Ballet’s second company. Cong’s works were instrumental in the growth of a generation of Tulsa Ballet dancers, as his choreography pushes the stylistic versatility and artistry of every dancer involved.
“Our second company has been growing in scope, talent and accomplishment during the past decade,” says Artistic Director Marcello Angelini. “In fact, this year about 80% of the main company, including some soloists, are TBII alumni. During the COVID pandemic, because of the nature of working in pods, TBII performed shoulder to shoulder with the main company, always in the same programs as the main company. Because of their artistic and technical consistency, talent and their exuberant energy, they earned their place in the main company’s Creations in Studio K.”
ABOUT CREATIONS IN STUDIO K
Created in 2008 by Tulsa Ballet Artistic Director Marcello Angelini, Creations in Studio K provides a necessary proving ground for the creation of new dance.
Angelini said, “What differentiates a vibrant arts organization from your run-of-the-mill ballet company is its dedication to consistently contributing new works to the national and international market. There are dance companies that are ‘museums,’ just presenting existing works in order to survive. Then, there are dance companies that identify with the importance of contributing to the future of the art form. It is those companies, like Tulsa Ballet, that chart the course of the field for decades to come.”
He asks, “Why is creating new work so important? Because tradition and innovation are one and the same. Giselle, Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and others were leading works of their times. Now, those works are the tradition of dance and it falls upon us to create the tradition of the next centuries.
